Mandela Bay Theatre Complex Calls for Urgent Intervention to Safeguard South Africa’s Creative Industry

Just before World Theatre Day, the team at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex basically said, “Guys… we need to talk.” And not a small talk — a serious family meeting type of talk.

“Self-Sustainability”? Sounds Cute, But…

CEO Monde Ngonyama did not come to play. He called out this whole idea of “self-sustainability” in the arts, saying it’s starting to sound like code for, “you’re on your own, good luck.” Yoh. 😭

Because let’s be real — expecting theatres to survive without proper funding is like expecting your broke friend to host a groove. The vibes might be there, but the snacks? Non-existent. 😩

Ngonyama even brought receipts, reminding everyone that legends like William Shakespeare had patrons backing them. So this idea that artists must now magically survive solo? Hai, it’s not adding up.

The Real Issue? Money, My Friend

Behind the scenes, places like MBTC are dealing with tight budgets from government — and it’s starting to show. According to Ngonyama, the arts are being treated like that one group project member everyone ignores… until presentation day. 😅

And honestly? That’s a problem. Because the arts aren’t just “nice to have” — they shape culture, tell our stories, and keep the nation connected. Without them, vibes? Finished.

But It’s Not All Doom and Gloom

MBTC isn’t just complaining — they’re pushing. Hard.

Spokesperson Vuyelwa Hlehlisa says they’re opening their doors wider, engaging media, and making sure more people know what they’re about.

Basically: “If you don’t know us, come see for yourself.” Period.

They’re even running immersive programmes so people can experience the magic of theatre firsthand. Because once you feel it? Yoh, you understand why it matters.

Big Question: Does Mzansi Value the Arts?

At the heart of it all, Ngonyama asked the real question: does South Africa actually value the arts enough to invest in them?

Because let’s be honest — we love a good show, a powerful performance, a story that hits home… but when it comes to funding? Suddenly it’s quiet. Too quiet.
