If there’s one thing Mzansi knows how to do, it’s turning pain into purpose and dreams into movement. And when it comes to carrying the torch for youth culture, the legacy of Riky Rick is still doing exactly that — inspiring a whole new generation of creatives to chase their dreams like their WiFi depends on it.
Enter the University of Cotton Fest Creative Programme — a community-driven initiative that continues the creative vision behind the iconic CottonFest. Think of it as a campus for young talent… but instead of textbooks and boring lectures, you get beats, bars, art, fashion and pure creative energy. Basically, the kind of “school” most of us wish we went to.
According to Bianca Naidoo, the programme was born from a simple but powerful vision: creating real opportunities for young creatives across South Africa.
The goal? To build a space where talent can grow, ideas can collide (in a good way), and the next generation of artists, designers and cultural leaders can find their voice. Because if there’s one thing Riky Rick believed in, it was telling young people: your story matters — now go tell it loudly.
And honestly, that energy still hits harder than a surprise load shedding schedule.
The 2026 Class Is Ready to Cook
Now here’s where things get extra spicy.
The 2026 class of the University of Cotton Fest Creative Programme is kicking things off with something special — a CottonFest Mixtape that brings together 10 Open Mic alumni artists from 2022 to 2025.
And trust, this isn’t just any mixtape.
The project was produced by the super-talented MashBeatz, blending everything from hip-hop and amapiano to R&B, Afropop, trap and alternative sounds. In other words, it’s basically the musical equivalent of a Sunday kasi braai — a little bit of everything, and somehow it all works perfectly.
The mixtape was created during a week-long bootcamp hosted by the programme in June 2025. For the first time, all the Open Mic alumni met, collaborated and cooked up what the organisers believe is the hip-hop South Africa needs right now.
No pressure, right? 😅
But judging by the talent involved, this project might just have people saying, “Yoh, who is this artist and why have I been sleeping on them?”
Graduation Day Is Almost Here
Now the moment the class has been waiting for is finally arriving.
The official “graduation ceremony” — aka the mixtape release — will take place on 26 March 2026 for media, with the full project dropping on all streaming platforms on 27 March at midnight.
So if you suddenly see people on your timeline tweeting things like “This tape is fire!” at 00:03… don’t say we didn’t warn you.
A Legacy That Refuses to Fade
More than just a programme or a mixtape, the University of Cotton Fest Creative Programme represents something deeper — a movement built on mentorship, collaboration and opportunity.
It’s about giving young creatives a chance to shine, connect and build careers in industries that haven’t always been easy to access.
And in true Riky Rick fashion, the message behind it all is simple but powerful:
We never die. We multiply.
And judging by the energy coming out of this programme, the future of South African creativity is looking very, very bright.
